Opera Launches Multi-OS Mobile App Store with More Than 140,000 Free and Paid Apps, iOS Not Supported

Opera Launches Multi-OS Mobile App Stores

Mobile browser Opera launched a Web-based app store on Tuesday, featuring mobile apps for every major platform except Apple’s iOS.

Head to the Opera Mobile Store to browse over 140,000 free and paid apps for the Android, Blackberry, Java, Palm, Symbian, and Windows Mobile platforms. The storefront has been optimized for the 100 million Opera Mini or Opera Mobile browser users around the world, and is currently available in 200 countries, the company said. However, the store can also be accessed through any mobile Web browser.

“The launch of the Opera Mobile Store supports Opera’s core belief in an open, cross-platform mobile Internet experience by providing Opera users with an integrated storefront of mobile applications,” Mahi de Silva, executive vice president of Consumer Mobile at Opera Software, said in a statement.

Opera Mobile Store, which had 15 million users during its February beta release, was built using a white label app store platform called Appia, recently re-branded from Pocketgear. Appia also powers app stores for Samsung, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and AT&T.

Opera has also launched an Opera Publisher Portal for developers to publish and distribute their apps. Like Apple does with the App Store and Google with the Android Market, Opera will take a 30 percent cut of an app’s net revenue.

A spokeswoman for Opera declined to comment on the future availability of iOS apps in the Opera Mobile Store.
