Orange Romania Fined US$ 46 Million While Vodafone Romania Fined US$ 38 Million For Abusing Their Market Position

The Romanian units of mobile operators Vodafone Group Plc and France Telecom SA‘s Orange are facing a combined euro63 million ($85 million) in fines for what officials say was abuse of their dominant market position.

Agerpres news agency reports Bogdan Chiritoiu, head of the Competition Council, as saying the two international mobile operators blocked the calls of clients of NetMaster Communication, a fixed telephone operator, to their network in 2004 and 2006. NetMaster Communication was offering cheaper national and international calls.

Orange’s Romania unit was fined about euro34 million (US$45.7 million) while Vodafone was hit with about euro28 million (US$37.6 million) on Tuesday by the Romanian competition regulator

Vodafone and Orange both said Tuesday they would challenge the council’s ruling in court.
